6. Where did Christmas Elves come from ?
You
should ask Scandinavia if you're in the broader idea of elves. The theory
originated from ancient tradition in the region that elves are house gnomes
protecting from evil in their residential areas. All of this led to a mild
debate in the 1920s over where Santa, Ms. Claus, and the elves actually live , reindeers
don't live on the North Pole, but there are plenty of reindeers in Lapland,
Finland — so there was a misconception that Santa and company really need to be
located there. It was commercialism, and there's now a huge Santa's Village out
there studded with elves.
7. Why do we hang Christmas Stockings?
Presents
are known to have been carried as far back as the 1100s in stockings and shoes.
"Nuns spread the idea of a mysterious night angel that arrives and brings
children's toys," explained Gerry Bowler, a professor of history at the
University of Manitoba, in a 2010 YouTube channel video. "Children were
allowed to remove their shoes and placed in little gifts. And the shoe precedes
the storage." When the child were good, the shoes might be packed with
treats, but when the child were considered naughty, they could have coal,
sticks, and even manure.
It is further believed that the practice of leaving a shoe to
be filled with presents predates Christianity; its origins that lie in the
folklore of the North. It is known that in parts of Northern Europe and
Scandinavia, children would put a shoe or clog filled with fruit, sugar, and
straw at the heart for the flying horse of the Norse God Odin, Sleipnir, during
the Winter Solstice. As a reward for their kindness, the shoe would be filled
with gifts and candy. This tradition was then modified for St. Nicholas Day,
where the boots were set out for Sinterklaas and his horse in the days leading
up to Dec. 6, often loaded with carrots.

9. What has romance gotta do with a Christmas Mistletoe tree ?
Mistletoe
is a plant growing in a number of trees including willow trees, apple trees and
oak trees. Hanging it in the house tradition dates back to the ancient druids.
It should have mystical powers that bring good fortune to the household and
drive evil spirits back. It has also been used in the mythology of Norse as a
sign of love and friendship, and this is where the custom of kissing under
Mistletoe comes from.
Mistletoe's
practice of hugging originated from Scotland. The initial tradition was that
before the person could be hugged, a berry was taken from the Mistletoe sprig
and when all the berries were finished, there could be no more kissing!
The
name mistletoe is taken from two English words ' Mistel' (meaning dung) and'
tan' (meaning) twig or pin! So Mistletoe could be translated as' poo on a
stick'!!!
